Water Trek Training

Description

This 15-hour course prepares unit leaders to operate on flat and moving water. Leaders completing Sessions I, II, and III-B receive a patch and numbered card.

A trained adult with a current registration card must accompany units on all water outings for the unit to earn High Adventure Awards.

All Water Trek specific classes, known collectively as "Session III-B", are held at the Fiesta Island Youth Aquatic Center on Mission Bay (see map).

Water Trek Session III-B weeknight session covers:

  • Safe Swim Defense
  • Safety Afloat
  • Canoeing Safety
  • Planning a Water Trek
  • Rules and Procedures for use on the river.
Water Trek Session III-B weekend sessions cover:
  • Equipment-PFDs
  • parts of the paddle and canoe
  • Canoe Handling:
    - basic canoeing strokes
    - solo and tandem practice
  • Canoe rescue

RE-TRAINING: Leaders must renew their Water Trek card every four years by repeating the first two meetings of Session III-B.

NOTE: Sessions I and II are attended by both Water Trek and HALTT students; classes are held at Northminster Presbyterian Church. Session III-B is specific to Water Trek Training, with classes held at the Mission Bay location.
